A PLACE UNIQUE IN THE WORLD

TERAMO

Framed by the skyline of the Gran Sasso and the Monti della Laga mountains with its peaks and slopes, Teramo is the centre of a local community that extends along the Tordino river. This valley is enclosed between the borders of the Vomano and Vibrata rivers and descends gently towards its splendid coast. Teramo is a town rich in history, nature and culture. It lies only 30 kilometers (20 miles) from the Adriatic sea. The coast boasts fifty kilometers of golden sand and unpolluted waters. Here we also find the most spectacular snow-capped peaks in the Central Appennines. It is a tourist resort of some relevance due to its medieval as well as roman past, the presence of National Parks, and its gastronomical tradition. It is a town in continuous evolution. A town that is trying to modify its appearance and its economic situation. From an almost purely agricultural economy, the town has strived to achieve both industrial and scientific targets. Here we find the “INFN laboratories” (National Institute for Nuclear Physics), the largest in the world. There is also the Astronomical Observatory of Collunaria and the Experimental Zooprophilactic Institute. The University has provided great support by means of degree courses, University Diplomas, graduate schools and further education that were able to attract around eleven thousand students.

THE PROVINCE OF TERAMO

The province extends over a surface of 1,948 square kilometers, much of which is hilly. The territory rises to the west towards the peaks of the mountains of the Gran Sasso and to the north towards the Monti della Laga mountains. It is a very varied and captivating land with the blue depths of the sea and the golden gleam of the sand on one side and the multicoloured shades of green, brown and gold of our cultivated hills. Beyond that there is the deep green of the forests lying at the foot of dazzling gray and white mountain peaks.

Thanks to its extensive forests, the province of Teramo is at the heart of the “Green Region of Europe”.

The coast is Abruzzo’s longest. Its width can exceed 100 meters and its length stretches for about 50 kilometers. It appears extremely pleasant with its tree-lined and flowered seafront, clean golden sandy shores, gentle marine slopes and clear waters. The climate obviously varies between the coast and the mountains: it is very Mediterranean along the coast where temperatures stay above freezing; inland, the cool summer temperature is balanced by winters when temperatures often fall below zero degrees centigrade. Teramo is located right between these two climate zones; surrounded by hills, its climate is generally mild although freezing days and the occasional snowfall are not unknown.
